Bienvenid@.

ABOUT US

How did it all start?

One day, a few friends, all animal lovers, decided that something neededto be done about the shockingly high number of abandoned dogs in the area. so we came up with the idea of starting a dog shelter where  we could provide   these abandoned animals with a roof over their head and food. And what better name could we have chosen than Melampo, the name of the dog statue at the entrance to our beautiful town of San Roque? So this how Melampo Dog shelter was born.

In mid-2003, we managed to acquire a piece of land which we'l always be grateful for. The first shelter was very makeshift with just a few volunteers helping out  at weekends and trying to make things work the best way they could. Shortly after, our first five abandoned dogs moved in, one of  which is still alive and well today :  Paco! The shelter has expanded ever since with more and more dogs arriving, each with their own stories and personalities. All of them are given names and many  of them have been successfully adopted and now lead happy and healthy lives in their new forever homes. You can find out all about them on this site. And that's what we really want for them: a loving and caring home which is what every animal deserves.

Sometimes we  come across a huge number of abandoned and cruelly-treated dogs and our funding seems like it's rapidly dwindling. At those times, things seem pretty rough for our shelter. But , when that happens, we remind ourselves of all the success stories we've had in Melampo. We  look at photos of our dogs whec they first arrived here, some of them barely alive, full of lear in  their eyes. And then we turn to the numerous photos and videos of them now in their  new forever  homes-healthy, happy and enjoying life to the full. Hundreds of our Melamppo dogs have been  rehomed. They are our Melamperros  ( perro= dog in Spanish)
